A comparative in-vitro study to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of raw and processed Gandhaka

Abstract
Introduction: Gandhaka is extensively used by Ayurvedic practitioners for treating a wide range of skin disorders. Internally as well as externally, it has shown good prospective in controlling various Kshudra Kustha. Aims and objectives: Present study was carried out to assess in vitro antimicrobial potential of raw Gandhaka and Shodhita Gandhaka by two different methods (Godugdha and Bhringaraja). Material and Methods: Two Grampositive, two Gram-negative and single strain of fungus were used for the present study. Gentamicin and clotrimazole were taken as standard control. The test was performed by making wells of specific diameter (generally 6 mm) on to the surface of the pre sterilized agar plates over which culture of the microorganism was inoculated (Well diffusion assay). After 18 to 24 hours of incubation, the size of a clear zone of inhibition around the well was assessed for the antimicrobial activity of the drug against the test strain. Results and conclusion: Raw as well Shuddha Gandhaka showed non-significant antimicrobial activity on Gram-positive, Gram-negative and fungal strains. The study concluded that there was no difference in antibacterial activity of raw and Shodhita samples of Gandhaka by different methods. However, on antifungal activity, Ashuddha sample of Gandhaka showed more activity in comparison to Shodhita samples.
