Abstract
Hypertension is called a silent killer because it rarely provides symptoms before it damages the heart, brain or kidney. It is an important public health challenge in both economically developing and developed countries. It has been estimated that hypertension accounts for 6% of deaths of worldwide. Ayurvedic classics don’t provide any direct reference regarding essential hypertension. But still on the basis of etiology, pathogenesis and symptoms it can be correlated with Raktadushti in Ayurveda. For the clinical study a compound formulation named ‘Raktadushtihar Yoga’ (containing Sariva, Musta, Katuka, Patha and Patola) was selected. Total 47 patients of essential hypertension were selected from the OPD and IPD of Basic principles department, IPGT & RA, Jamnagar. Raktadushtihar Yoga (tablet) was given in the dose of 2 grams twice a day for the duration of one month. After one month of treatment 12.90% fall was observed in systolic blood pressure whereas diastolic blood pressure was fallen by 11.19%. Among symptoms of essential hypertension Shirashula (86.09%) Tamodarshana (88.51%), Bhrama (80.80%) and Krodhaprachurata (53.13 %) showed statistically highly significant results. Hence it can be concluded that the compound drug ‘Raktadushtihar Yoga’ was found as an excellent remedy for mild to moderate hypertension.
