Comprehensive Analysis of Topical Therapeutic Applications in Rasa Tarangini: A Narrative Review

Abstract
“Ayurveda, a time-honored system of medicine, owes its rich legacy to a vast collection of classical treatises. These ancient manuscripts encapsulate a wealth of knowledge that remains invaluable today. Rasashastra, a specialized branch of Ayurveda focusing on Herbo-mineral-based formulations, emerged prominently around the 7th century AD. Over centuries, numerous treatises have significantly contributed to this domain. Among these, Rasa Tarangini (RT), authored by Acharya Sadananda Sharma in the 20th century, is a cornerstone for practical pharmaceutical practices within Ayurveda. In clinical practice, it has been observed that several topical formulations discussed in RT are therapeutically effective. These formulations, spread across the 24 chapters of RT, represent a novel and practical approach to Ayurvedic medicine. Therefore, the aim of the present work was first to compile these formulations and then to provide a comprehensive analysis of their composition, method of preparation, and indication. This work is significant as it contributes to the understanding and potential advancement of Ayurvedic medicine. A comprehensive search was meticulously carried out through the 24 chapters of RT to document and analyze the spectrum of topical formulations described. The literary search resulted in a total of 127 topical formulations. These preparations have many therapeutic applications, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. Most of these formulations have not been thoroughly studied for their effectiveness, which opens an exciting potential for further research in the future". However, rigorous research is needed, including clinical trials, to establish their efficacy, safety, and optimal dosage.
