Abstract
Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the complete or partial absence of skin, typically presenting as localized areas of skin loss or ulceration, most commonly on the scalp while generally sparing the trunk and extremities. The estimated incidence ranges from 0.5 to 1 per 10,000 live births. The Frieden classification system categorizes ACC into nine groups based on lesion location, number, and associated malformations. Proposed etiological factors include impaired fetal skin perfusion, placental ischemia, intrauterine infections, and neural tube defects. Although complications are uncommon, they may include secondary infections, hemorrhage, and intracranial involvement. Management is often conservative, though extensive lesions may necessitate surgical intervention. We present a case of ACC with a 2.2 cm scalp defect, managed conservatively through Ayurvedic interventions. The diagnosis of ACC was made based on typical clinical presentation and physical examination findings, consistent with recognized diagnostic criteria.
Conservative treatment included wound cleansing with Panchavalkala Kwatha and topical application of Jatyadi Taila, as per classical Ayurvedic wound management protocols.
The patient responded well to treatment, with progressive wound healing and restoration of local tissue integrity. The outcome was favorable, underscoring the potential utility of timely diagnosis and integrative therapeutic approaches in the management of ACC. ACC is an infrequent congenital anomaly. Management strategies should be selected based on the lesion’s size, location, pattern, etiology, and the presence of associated anomalies. In appropriately selected cases, conservative treatment can offer effective outcomes without the need for surgical intervention.
