Abstract
Title: Effect of Ayurvedic Management in Shvitra w.s.r. Vitiligo: A Case Report
Introduction: Shvitra, a skin disease in Ayurveda, is characterized by whitish, discoloured patches. It is associated with Vitiligo, an immune-mediated disease characterized by the destruction of melanocytes in the skin, typically resulting in patches of depigmentation. The key problem is retaining pigmentation, which is often lost and takes longer to restore. Our current treatment strategy successfully achieved both goals in a short time.
Main Clinical Findings: A 14‑year‑old male child, came with complaints of whitish discoloured patches below the nape, over the neck, chest, and right hand with mild itching and burning sensation; was effectively treated with Kushta (~various skin diseases) line of treatment Kosthashuddhi (Shodhana) with Virechana initially, followed by repeated Shamana aushadhi (~internal medicine) and lepa (~local application).
Diagnosis: Shvitra (~Vitiligo).
Interventions: The patient had treatment with oral medications i.e., Avipatikar Churna, Yastimadhu Churna, Gandhaka Rasayana, Arogyavardhani vati, Aragwadadi Kashaya, Khadirarista, Manjisthadi Kashaya and the local application of Bakuchi Churna with Marichadi taila for 4 months. Gugglutikta Ghrita for Snehapana; Yastimadhu taila for Abhyanga, followed by Nadi Swedan; and Trivruth lehya and Drakshadi Kashaya for Virechana, were adopted.
Outcome: The above treatment plan was found significantly effective in the management of Shvitra, where subjective criteria were evaluated using the scoring method & objective criteria were assessed using the VETI scoring method.
Conclusion: Snehapana, Swedana, Virechana karma along natural remedies may be a potential treatment for hypopigmentation, but further studies using acceptable research methodology are needed for scientific validation.
