From Rasashala to Research: The Life, Work and Legacy of Padma Shri Vaidya Balendu Prakash

Abstract
The passing of Padma Shri Vaidya Balendu Prakash on 7th August, 2026 is an occasion not only for remembrance but also for reflection. Ayurveda has produced generations of physicians whose knowledge was transmitted through family lineages, teachers, texts and clinical experiences. Yet, only a few have attempted to build a bridge between this inherited knowledge and the increasingly demanding methods of contemporary scientific research. Vaidya Balendu Prakash belonged to the latter group.
His life can be understood as a journey through several interconnected worlds: the traditional Rasa-Vaidya household of his father; the preparation and clinical application of Ayurvedic medicines; the practical challenges of reproducibility; the treatment of patients with chronic diseases; the establishment of a residential therapeutic environment; and finally, the systematic documentation of clinical outcomes.
