Abstract
BACKGROUND
Vicharchika (Atopic Eczema) is a chronic skin disorder that disrupts the essential physiological functions of the skin, including its barrier protection, thermoregulation, and immune support. Its recurrent and relapsing nature leads to persistent discomfort, sleep disturbances, and increased vulnerability to infections. Beyond physical symptoms, the associated cosmetic concerns and continuous irritation significantly affect mental health, contributing to stress, anxiety, and a diminished quality of life.
CASE PRESENTATION:
A 16-year-old adolescent female with complaints of hyper-pigmentation with thickened skin of bilateral soles with pain for 5 months. Severe itching and burning sensation are the associated symptoms. The Hanifin and Rajka Criteria ascertained the diagnosis with no significant abnormality in blood investigations.
INTERVENTION:
Based on the assessment of the pathogenesis as per Ayurveda principles, the treatment focused primarily on the removal of the vitiated Doshas through Virechana (therapeutic purgation) followed by the regimen aimed at Kapha-Pitta Shamaka (pacifying excess Kapha and Pitta), Raktaprasadana (blood purification), and Vatanulomana (normalizing Vata). The intervention also included strict dietary modifications and precautions during and after the purification.
RESULTS
The patient's progress was evaluated using subjective assessments and the Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM) score. Following treatment, there was a marked improvement, with the POEM score decreasing from 21 to 5. No recurrence was observed during the follow-up period.
CONCLUSION:
This case highlights the effective management of Atopic Eczema through an Ayurvedic approach, underscoring the significance of personalized therapeutic strategies. The substantial improvement and absence of relapse emphasize the potential of Ayurveda in addressing chronic dermatological conditions like atopic eczema.
